2011 Autumn/Spring Course Collaboration
Students from the University of Western Australia (Perth, WA) and Brown University (Providence, RI) begin a semester long collaboration - autumn in Australia/spring in the US - via two engineering courses: Global Challenges in Engineering, GENG1003 at UWA and Appropriate Technology, ENGN 0930A at Brown U. Project teams from each class will work together to design and prototype the following:
- a manual shredder to shear sheets of fiber-reinforced plastic into smaller pieces for re-heating and pressing
- a solar thermal extruder to process waste plastic bags into pellets for injection molding
- a Kingston Hotpress design upgrade - including alternative heating solutions - as per user experience from Queens University, RISD, and the University of Buenos Aires
Waste for Life is facilitating this collaboration as part of our efforts to support socially and environmentally focused design and technology projects in higher education curriculum.
